I'm not a racist...
I'm not a racist...
As a lawyer, whenever I had a client say the words "It's not about the money", you could bet it was about the money.
Recently I noticed the same type of phenomena occuring with people discussing Obama.
A while back on the Don't Be A Lemming blog I pontificated on the idea that the polls would be inaccurate regarding how well Obama was going to do in the Southern states, specifically here in Texas. I had the distinct feeling that many people were saying they were undecided or even going so far as appearing to support him but once the curtain was pulled in the voting booth they simply would not vote for a black man if another choice was available. I still believe this accounts for the extreme inaccuracies in the exit polling data as compared to the actual returns.
I also noticed that it was my generation and the one above me who seemed to remark most often that they believed Obama wouldn't win, almost always prefacing it with "I'm not a racist but..."
If you're not, you wouldn't worry so much about whether or not you were being perceived that way.
