I Have A Question

I Have A Question

I have some questions about the oil business and I thought where better to ask them than on a blog.

Does anyone know how much and who pays for the oil that we are pumping into the strategic oil reserve? I remember hearing a few days ago that W is contiuing to store it away and was curious as to whether the taxpayers are footing the bill to enrich the coffers of the Bushes bestest friends, the Saudi royal family.

Next, does anybody have any idea how much oil/fuel we are burning to support the Iraq war? I'm also curious as to where it is coming from and how much we are paying for it. I've heard oil execs and conservatives say that the price of oil is because of "supply and demand" so it seems like if we weren't using it for the war it would increase the supply and lower the demand here in the U.S. thus reducing the price.

  • The following is excerpted from an MSNBC article located here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23922063/ "Overall, the military consumes about 1.2 million barrels, or more than 50 million gallons of fuel, each month in Iraq at an average $127.68 a barrel. That works out to about $153 million a month." "The U.S. military, through its Defense Energy Support Center, buys fuel on the open market, paying from $1.99 a gallon to as much as $5.30 a gallon under contracts with private and government-owned oil companies. The center then sets a fixed rate for troops, currently $3.51 a gallon for diesel, $3.15 for gasoline, $3.04 for jet fuel and $13.61 for a high-octane fuel used mostly in unmanned aerial vehicles." "Subsidies let Iraqis pay only about $1.36 a gallon."

  • Since we're providing the security seems like we'd be getting a better price doesn't it? Wonder which private contractors are making the most money off of fuel and everything else?

  • The Iraq war is a criminal enterprise through and through -- an absolute robbery of the American people. I don't know for sure about the oil purchases themselves, but virtually all the supply chain, in terms of moving supplies around for the troops, is controlled by Haliburton/KBR, from which Mr. Cheney and his friends still profit. IT'S DISGUSTING.
